Bob got home after working with the youth for the Appalachian Service Project. This year, they went to Man, WV. Two teams worked to refurbish an abandoned trailed for a young couple with a two month old baby. There were lots of stories to tell. It is good to have him home with all his fingers and toes.

On July 2nd, we went to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens with our friends Bill Eilerman and Verda Van Hart. The lotus were at their peak. It was afternoon when we arrived, so many of them had closed up to protect them from too much sun. Those that were open were past their peak and could no longer close. We saw other wildlife, some pictured below.

I went to Capri with my Mom and Aunt Catherine when I was 12. It has changed in 55 years. They still have crazy drivers; the blue grotto is still blue; and everything is still overpriced. That said, we had a great time, including our chair lift ride to the top.

One day, while painting on a shaded bench in Amalfi, we were joined by a group of school children. They were learning English and tried so hard to communicate. We ended up painting little pictures for each of them, per their requests. Snakes, bunnies, monsters, butterflies, etc. Some got smudged before they were dry, but they all seemed thrilled and we were happy to bring smiles to their beautiful faces. Their teacher gave us 7 euros and would not take it back, even though we protested.

Laundry is usually hanging on lines outside of balconies, or from balconies. I felt guilty putting so much in the dryer. Our little drying rack does not hold very much.

The window scene was done during a sedate period, when I was paying attention to Janice. It is called Shadows of Bevagna. The other painting is when my expressionistic self (the wild side) came out to play. It is called Buona Notte Amalfi. Our apartment was in the town of Atrani. It overlooked the Tyrrhenian Sea, church towers and domes, houses on the hillside, and beautiful beaches. I have marked where our apartment was. Atrani is 2 km from Amalfi, 0along a winding road, through one vehicle and one pedestrian tunnel. Jerry, Janice, Bob and I walked to Atrani each morning and evening to catch up with the fellow artist who lived in Atrani.

The Atrani Coast is famous for growing lemons and making Lemoncello. The hillsides are peppered with lemon groves. The lemons are very large.

The beautiful blue boat is used in rowing regattas, popular along the Amalfi Coast.

Broken Promises

I promised to share our vacation with our friends who read our blog, but, alas, our computer is on the fritz and I can only share without pictures for now. We are staying in a darling apartment in Atrani, a 15 minute walk from Amalfi. Our first day of painting was in Amalfi. Bob and I sat on the pier and painted cityscapes from that vantage point. After lunch, we were sitting on a shaded bench when a group of school children gathered around and tried to communicate with their English and our minimal Italian. We ended up painting a miniature painting for each of them and the teacher gave us 12 euros. Butterflies, birds, and snakes were very popular. The took them before they dried, so some of them got smudged, but they seemed happy.

Yesterday, we painted in Atrani. I settled in at a restaurant and painted most of the day there. Bob painted on the beach. Last evening we had a pot luck with the other painters, in Amalfi.

Today, we took the ferry to Positano. What a beautiful town. Once again, I found a restaurant and the waiter, Luca, kept me in coffee and water until Bob joined me for lunch. Such a fun way to paint. Tomorrow, we go to Ravello. More when we get to internet cafe again. K

Now, I am beginning to place the flowers. I think I want the two shasta daisies to be the stars of the painting, and the other pretty flowers the supporting cast. I lift these flowers out and add some paint to define them. Much more to follow.

The Evolution of Mary Jo's Bouquet

I had some extra Kay time this afternoon and began the process for painting Mary Jo's bouquet. This will be a watercolor on stretched canvas. The first step is to prime the canvas with rubbing alcohol to remove all fingerprints. Then I added lots and lots of magenta, yellow orange, blue, teal, purple in a random pattern. Now, it has to dry before I begin carving out the flowers, using a stiff lifting brush. More to follow.

The Source of the River Sorgue is located in a cave in the town of Fontaine de Vaucluse. The cave is so deep that Jacque Cousteau was never able to find the bottom. An algea grows in the water of the Sorgue that makes it very beautiful. This year was the first time we saw swimmers take the falls with these little half boats. Looks like a real rush. May give it a try next trip.

Perne le Fontaine was our home base for this trip. Our lovely gite was outside of the central walled village, complete with a mote. The town is proud ofd its many fountains and there is a market along the mote several days a week.

Bob and I took a side trip to the Principality of Monoco. We got to to the palace in time for the changing of the guards and spent too short a time enjoying the gardens and shops before the bus took us down to the Casinos. Neither of us had any interest in them, so we walked up and down the shore line and had some lunch. Saw lots of high ticket boats and cars, fancy seaside restaurants and gardens.

This lovely town on the Mediterranean is great for walking aroun and enjoying the view. Nice restaurants, good people watching. Great place to thaw out after a week of playing in the snow. Santa Margherita guards the town with her arms wide open.

Return Trip to Santa Catarina

We enjoyed Santa Catarina so much yesterday, we returned today with our trip leader, Judy Burlbaugh. We found another area that we did not explore yesterday that was way above the tree line (where it is so high the trees cannot grow). We had lunch at a the Sunny Valley Kelo restaurant that is over 9,000 feet above sea level. It was built by the Finns our of a special wood called Kelo. Outside was an igloo and replica of Stonehenge. Skies were blue and the snow conditions were perfect, even on the black diamond slopes. Perfect ending to our skiing in Italy.

Tuesday, March 9th, we took a side trip by bus and ferry to the towns of Varenna and Bellagio, on Lake Como. The villages have narrow streets that wind up hill, with larger homes the higher you climb. It was fascinating to see snow on mountains across the lake and lemons and oranges on the trees in the villages. It was in the 40s, but there were cyclamen blooming in window boxes.

Bormio Italy Fun Fun Fun

Bormio is a medieval village in the Italian Alps with several ski slopes nearby. Bormio ski slope is the closest and the goldola starts in the town about 1/2 mile from our hotel. The shuttle bus service is excellent. Tuesday evening the town of Bormio gave us a welcome party in the village square. They made glue wine and there were dancers on stage. This part of Italy was once owned by the Austrians and has a strong Bavarian flavor.

Christmas Eve at the McKay House

Traditionally, the Fuller family gathers on Christmas eve for a fun evening of dining, gifting and playing Santa Mayhem. This Christmas eve was way up there on the best of list. We gathered at Glynis & Jim's house, had a wonderful dinner, the younger grandkids opened gifts then the adults got vicious, well almost, over the portable DVD player and digital photo frames.

Long time no blog

What good is a stale blog? Bob and I had a wonderful thanksgiving with the Fuller clan at Gayle's house. Lots to eat and then we wrapped presents for the stocking and sweatshirt projects at church. Our church prepares 400 stockings and lots and lots of sweatshirts for children with parents who are incarcerated in PG County.

Bob and I went to the Corcoran Gallery of Art to see John Singer Sargent's "Sargent and the See." It was a nice exhibit, but the one that really got to us was Edward Burtynsky's Oil exhibition of photographs documenting the production, distribution, uses and end of oil. It was powerful and evoked a lot of emotion in me. There were photographs of acres and acres of carcasses of planes, cars, engines, tires, oil barrels and tankers.

Day four, my camera battery died. So, here are todays shots. We painted at the Camden Yacht Club and of course we had lots of boats to watch entering and leaving the port.

These are two shots of the view from our balcony at the Ledges by the Bay in Rockport, Maine. We are here for a five day watercolor workshop with Steve Fleming. I had lobster in Wakefield, Mass, last night and hope to have many more this week.

Bob is Giving Back

Bob was part of a team that went to UMCOR Mission Central in Mechanicsburg PA yesterday. They took a truckload of old computers, monitors, & printers to be recycled, and School Kits for distribution to poor families with children. While there, they packed cleaning buckets, "Flood Buckets," to be available for the next flooded area.

I planned to go, but got called in to work.

Bob's Volunteer Experience at the National Archives

Friday was Bob's first day at the National Archives. He was one of many volunteers putting together information for the wives of the Civil War casualties. These documents included petitions for pensions as well as proof of the death of their spouses and the spouses war information. So many of these fellows died of diseases and wounds of battle. Of interest, only the Union forces were entitled to pensions as the Confederate soldiers were considered traitors...the secessionists. A law was passed in the mid twentieth century that reversed this. I don't think many were left to collect their pensions.

Aunt Catherine's 97th Birthday Celebration

Bob and I met our friends, Linda and Bill Owens in Abingdon on Friday for a weekend of celebration of Aunt Catherine's 97th birthday and the Highlands Festival in Abingdon.

Dan and Amy, Mike and Tamara, grandsons Ben and Evan, and Joanne and Bob Horsht helped Aunt Catherine celebrate her big day with a feast and cake.

Plein Air Festival - Easton, MD

Kay had a wonderful day with her friends Virginia, Mary and David, and new friends Polly and Bob, in Easton Maryland. Easton has a week long Plein Air Festival each year. Artists from all over the country come to paint outside (Plein Air) in Easton and the surrounding area. They paint for several days, frame their paintings and enter them in a juried show at the Art Academy. A gala is held on Friday evening and awards are given.

On Saturday they have a quick draw contest. They select their subject prior to 10:00 AM and paint from 10:00 AM to noon. Then they frame their paintings and display them on the street. The winning paintings in both the Plein Air and Quick Draw contests were watercolors. 90% of the paintings were oils.

Visit with Christian

I spent Tuesday and Wednesday with my grandson, Christian Degges. We walked to, through and home from the American History and Air & Space Museums on Tuesday, and went out to dinner. Wednesday, he went to my art class at Glen Echo and then we went to the Air and Space Museum in Chantilly. That boy surely knows a lot about aircraft. It was fun having him visit. He has matured so much in the past six months. K

Bob's Mission Trip

Bob and about 15 youth and 6 adults left St. Matthews UMC around 7:30 am today. They arrived safely in Hinton, WV, around 3:00 PM. They have reviewed their assignments and will be going to the work sites after dinner tonight. I am not sure what Bob's team is going to be doing, but will let you know as soon as I get word and, hopefully, pictures from him. Please keep them in your prayers. Kay

Elton John & Billy Joel Concert

Elisabeth and I just got back from the Elton John and Billy Joel concert. Wow, what a show. Bob was not interested in going. He missed a good one. Elton's piano had a problem and he walked off stage while they fixed it, so Billy Joel brought the house down with an hour long concert. Then Elton returned for another hour of his hits, then they did 45 minutes of duets. Awesome show and worth every cent of the ticket price.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

Kay took her first adventure with the Lee Walkers today. We had a wonderful walk through the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in NE DC. The waterlilies and Lotus were at their peak. Here are some lotus shots. They grow much taller than the standard waterlilies. They have a large yellow seed pod in the middle that continues to grow after the petals drop.

Bob and I got home in time to see the concert on the west lawn of the Capitol. Our friend, Elisabeth joined us.

Hosted by Jimmy Smits, America's biggest birthday party featured appearances by Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin, Natasha Bedingfield, the Jersey Boys cast, Michael Feinstein, Andrew von Oeyen, members of Sesame Street, and more! The fireworks were spectacular.

Bob Makes The Chautauqua Daily

Bob got his picture in the Chautauqua Daily newspaper on July 1, 2009.
Bob is the dude in the leather hat, talking to an attractive blond lady that is not Kay. He was in line to get a book of love sonnets signed by Garrison Keillor.

Garrison is as homely as a mud fence, but his voice is chocolate for the ears.

We are getting into the swing of things here at the Chautauqua Institution. We heard the Army Field Band, sang spiritual songs, learned about the Bahai's views of raising children, heard fiddlers, chamber quartet, learned about the Gnostic Gospels, took a watercolor class, went to the farmers market and walked around this beautiful campus. High point was Garrison Keillor's performance tonight. Awesome is an understatement.

We are snuggly nestled in our room at The Ashland guest house in the Chautauqua Institution (CI). The CI is a 738 acre educational center and Victorian village on the west shore of Lake Chautauqua, NY. It was founded in 1874 as a center where Methodist ministers, superintendents and Sunday school teachers could come together to study teaching methods. Over the past 135 years it has evolved into a cultural and educational center with a variety of venues available to visitors and residents.

Our first taste of culture was provided by The Golden Boys, Bobby Rydell, Fabian, and Frankie Avalon. These guys, well into their sixties, put on quite a show and shared some video clips of them in their hay day, the late 1950s. Frankie Avalon’s son (one of his eight children) accompanied him on the drums and Don Everly’s son,Edan, was his guitar player. Young Everly and Frankie did a medley of the Everly Brother’s greatest hits. That young man can play and sing as well as his Dad and Uncle Phil.
